Five Programs At Shoreline Public Schools Every Parent Should Know About
While Shoreline Public Schools may have one of the most active Parent Teacher Associations in Washington, it’s nearly impossible for parents to keep up with every new initiative or program within their child’s school. As such, we’ve compiled five programs you might not be aware of that Shoreline Public Schools offers to every child in the district.
Specifically an English and Spanish language program, in the 2017-18 school year, dual language classes will begin in Kindergarten and 1st grade at Briarcrest Elementary. Every year thereafter, one grade level will be added until complete K-6 implementation is reached.
While there are many benefits to this course of learning, here are a few worth highlighting:
- Learning a second language at a young age in particular, “Creates more flexibility and creativity in thinking, greater sensitivity to language and a better ability to listen.”
- By communicating with students of varying cultural backgrounds, students learn the importance of respecting the diversity of all peoples.
- Students participating in this program are more likely to develop skills above their grade level in all academic areas.
- And of course, students will leave the program able to speak fluently in both English and Spanish; they will be able to read and write at equal levels for each language.
The program consists of classrooms with an equal number of students whose native languages are English or Spanish. They will have a “bilingual buddy” to help them learn while at the same time teaching their own native language. Half of every day will be taught in Spanish and half will be taught in English. During each session, the teacher will communicate only in the designated language with no translation – a truly immersive way to learn a new language while enriching your child’s prospects for an ever-changing world.
The aim of this program is to provide as many courses spanning numerous disciplines to students in grades 9-12. Such students may require a non-traditional learning environment, need more flexibility in their class schedule, or wish to take classes online that they are unable to enroll in at their designated school. Shoreline Virtual Learning even allows students who are in need of extra credit hours the opportunity to stay on track and graduate with their classmates. At the same time, the program allows students who are ready to take on extra courses and wish to graduate early that opportunity.
Perhaps the most well known program on the list thus far, Shoreline has made significant changes to HiCap for the 2017-18 school year. For example, to be eligible for HiCap services, students will only need to qualify in either math or English language arts. Previously, the service was only available to students who successfully qualified in both subjects.
This state-funded program supports students who might need extra help in reading, writing, and mathematics. If your child is performing below standard on state- and district-wide tests, these services are there to help with one-on-one academic guidance and support. Specifically, “the focus of LAP support is on literacy for grades K-6”. However, Shoreline also earmarks funds to support mathematics development for grades 7-12.
Career & Technical Education is comprised of of courses and experiences to help students explore various career paths. While supporting academic achievement, CTE also helps students develop leadership qualities, life skills, and encouragement to pursue higher education. The purpose of CTE is to help them transition from high school to the working world, continue their education through options such as the military, technical school, two-year community college, or university. Many of these courses also provide college credit, giving your child a head start regardless of the path they choose.
